Founded in 1886 as Dial Square FC by munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, south-east London, the club later became Royal Arsenal, then Woolwich Arsenal. In 1913, the club relocated north of the Thames to Highbury and eventually dropped "Woolwich" from its name, becoming simply Arsenal.
The 1930s saw a golden era under Herbert Chapman, with five league titles in a row. A league and FA Cup Double followed in 1970-71. The appointment of Arsene Wenger in 1996 revolutionised English football, bringing a continental philosophy that yielded three league titles and two more Doubles.
The move from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium in 2006 strained the club's finances for years. Under Mikel Arteta, appointed in 2018, Arsenal have been rebuilt into genuine title contenders, finishing as runners-up three seasons in succession.
In the 2003-04 season, Arsenal completed an entire 38-match Premier League campaign unbeaten — 26 wins, 12 draws, zero defeats. The team earned the legendary nickname "The Invincibles," becoming the only side in the modern English top flight to achieve the feat. Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires, and Dennis Bergkamp were among the stars of a side that redefined what was thought possible.
The unbeaten run extended to 49 consecutive league matches before being ended controversially at Old Trafford in October 2004. In 2012, the squad was voted the "Best Team" in the Premier League 20 Seasons Awards.
Opened in 2006, the Emirates holds 60,704 spectators, making it the second-largest football stadium in England after Wembley. It was built just 500 metres from the club's former home at Highbury, where Arsenal had played for 93 years.
The naming rights are held by Emirates airline. The stadium meets UEFA's highest category standards. While the construction cost of approximately 390 million pounds placed a significant financial burden on the club in the years following the move, the investment now underpins Arsenal's commercial strength.
Under Mikel Arteta, Arsenal combine possession-based build-up with set-piece excellence and defensive solidity. The typical 4-3-3 shape features an inverted left-back who tucks into midfield, creating numerical superiority in the centre of the pitch.
In 2024-25, Arsenal recorded the fewest goals conceded in the league (34) and kept 13 clean sheets. Their attacking threat is built on quick transitions and clinical set-piece delivery, making them one of the most complete sides in English football.
