Club History

Founded in 1901, Brighton faced extinction in the 1990s when their Goldstone Ground was sold, forcing the club to play "home" matches 70 miles away in Gillingham. After years at a borrowed athletics track, Tony Bloom took ownership in 2009 and transformed the club's fortunes.

Bloom, founder of the sports analytics firm Starlizard, embedded a data-driven philosophy into every level of the club — from scouting to tactics to business decisions. The Amex Stadium opened in 2011, promotion to the Premier League arrived in 2017, and the club has stayed in the top flight for nine consecutive seasons. In 2022-23, Brighton finished 6th and qualified for the Europa League for the first time in their history.

Playing Style

Building on the possession-based DNA established by Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi, Fabian Hurzeler added intense pressing and counter-pressing to the mix when he was appointed in 2024. At 31, he became the youngest permanent head coach in Premier League history.

His primary formation is a 4-2-3-1, though he flexibly shifts to 4-2-4 or 3-4-3 depending on the match. A distinctive feature is his concept of "emptying the midfield" — midfielders deliberately vacate central areas to create overloads in wide positions. Brighton led the league in counter-pressing actions during 2024-25.

The Amex Stadium

Officially Falmer Stadium, located on the outskirts of Brighton. Tony Bloom invested £93 million in its construction. Opened in 2011, it seats 31,876 spectators.

The campaign to build at Falmer involved one of the longest planning battles in English football history, requiring a public inquiry and government approval. For fans who lived through the years of homelessness, this stadium is the ultimate symbol of the club's revival.

Legends & Transfer Business

Gordon Smith created one of the FA Cup's most iconic moments in the 1983 final with the famous "and Smith must score" chance. Captain Lewis Dunk, an academy graduate and one-club man with over 15 years of service, remains the heart of the squad.

In recent years, Brighton have become renowned for their buy-low, sell-high transfer model. Moises Caicedo departed for Chelsea in a £115 million deal, while Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool), Marc Cucurella (Chelsea), and Ben White (Arsenal) all left for substantial fees. The club's net transfer profit set a Premier League record.
