Founded on 18 May 1882, when members of the rugby team Burnley Rovers voted to switch to association football, Burnley are one of English football's most historic institutions. The club was among the 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888, the world's first league football competition. They have called Turf Moor home since 1883.
Burnley claimed the league title in 1920-21 and enjoyed a golden era under Harry Potts in the early 1960s, winning a second championship and reaching the European Cup quarter-finals. A long decline followed, with the club falling to the fourth tier by the 1980s. Revival came in 2009 with a first Premier League promotion, and under Sean Dyche from 2016 onwards, Burnley established themselves as top-flight regulars for six seasons with a trademark defensive resilience.
Relegated in 2023-24, they bounced back at the first attempt. Burnley have now achieved immediate promotion following each of their last three Championship relegations, a testament to their remarkable resilience.
The 2024-25 Championship season was one for the history books. Burnley reached 100 points yet finished second behind Leeds United on goal difference, becoming the first team in English football history to amass 100 points without winning the division title.
Their defensive record was extraordinary: just 16 goals conceded in 46 matches, the best in English league history. Between December and March, they kept 12 consecutive clean sheets, setting a new Football League record. The team went unbeaten at home all season and finished on a 33-match unbeaten run. Scott Parker was named EFL Championship Manager of the Season.
Manager Scott Parker favours a pragmatic, defence-first approach. The primary formation is 4-2-3-1, with a 3-4-2-1 variant used in certain matches. The team sits in a compact low block, crowding the midfield and using clearly defined pressing triggers to exploit opponents' errors.
In attack, the emphasis is on counter-attacks and set pieces. Parker, who previously managed Fulham and Bournemouth in the Premier League, has maintained the defensive solidity that powered the Championship campaign while working to raise the intensity needed for the top flight.
In use since 1883, Turf Moor holds 21,944 supporters and is the second-longest continuously occupied football ground in England, behind only Preston North End's Deepdale. The site has hosted sport since at least 1843, when Burnley Cricket Club moved to the area.
The ground embodies the identity of a proud Lancashire mill town where football and community are deeply intertwined. Its compact layout and vocal home support create a particularly intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams, a hallmark of traditional English football.
Burnley have been under American ownership since ALK Capital (now Velocity Sports Partners) completed their takeover in 2020. Chairman Alan Pace has introduced a data-informed approach to club management. Following promotion, the club invested over £100 million in summer 2025 to build a squad capable of maintaining its Premier League status, signalling a commitment to avoiding an immediate return to the Championship.
