Club history

Founded in 1883 as Singers F.C., a works team from a bicycle manufacturer. Coventry spent 34 consecutive seasons in the top flight from 1967 to 2001 and won the FA Cup in 1987 — never glamorous, but very hard to shift.

Relegation in 2001 began a long spell in the lower divisions. Since returning to the Championship in 2020 the club has rebuilt steadily, and on 17 April 2026 they sealed promotion with three games to spare, ending a 25-year absence from the Premier League.

2025-26 — promotion at a canter

Coventry won the Championship by an 11-point margin, never dropping out of the top two after September and scoring a division-high 97 goals. The goals were spread across the squad rather than resting on one star.

Frank Lampard took charge in November 2024, replacing the long-serving Mark Robins with the club two points above the relegation zone. Eighteen months later he had them promoted.

Coventry Building Society Arena

Opened in 2005, with a football capacity of 32,609. It doubles as a rugby and concert venue, expanding to around 40,000 for music events.

Coventry once had to play "home" games in another city amid a dispute over the stadium's operation, so simply being settled here is part of the club's recovery story.

Players to watch

Haji Wright (#11, FW) led the promotion charge with 18 Championship goals. The 193cm USA international arrived via Schalke and Antalyaspor and produced the best season of his career in England.

In midfield, Matt Grimes — a long-serving Swansea captain — sets the tempo. Kaine Kesler-Hayden at left-back and academy graduate Josh Eccles will be among those experiencing the Premier League for the first time.

Japanese players

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto (#7, MF) is in the squad. The 170cm attacker came to Coventry via Montedio Yamagata, Cerezo Osaka and Oostende in Belgium, and now steps up to the Premier League for the first time after being part of the promotion campaign.
