Liverpool FC were founded in 1892 following a rent dispute between Everton and John Houlding, the owner of the land at Anfield. When Everton relocated across Stanley Park to Goodison Park, Houlding established a new club to fill the vacant stadium. Over 130 years later, Anfield remains Liverpool's home.
The arrival of Bill Shankly in 1959 transformed the club's fortunes. Shankly converted a boot storage room at Anfield into a tactical hub, and alongside Joe Fagan, Reuben Bennett, and Bob Paisley, rebuilt the team from the ground up. His successor Bob Paisley won 20 trophies in nine seasons, including three European Cups and six league titles, establishing Liverpool as one of Europe's elite clubs. The club have won six European Cups / Champions League titles in total, with the 2005 "Miracle of Istanbul" standing as one of football's greatest comebacks.
With 20 English league titles, Liverpool are joint-record holders alongside Manchester United. They ended a 30-year wait for the league in 2019-20, and won it again in 2024-25 under new head coach Arne Slot.
In May 2024, Jurgen Klopp departed Anfield after nine years in charge. His reign delivered the Premier League title, Champions League, FA Cup, and two League Cups. In an emotional farewell speech after his final home game, Klopp broke into tears as the Anfield crowd sang his name. In a characteristically generous gesture, he ended by chanting the name of his likely successor to the tune of "Live is Life," urging fans to welcome the new manager wholeheartedly.
Arne Slot, the Dutch coach who won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord, was appointed as head coach. He delivered the Premier League title in his debut season, a transition described as "the immaculate handover." Slot was also named LMA Manager of the Year for his achievements.
Slot's philosophy marks a clear departure from Klopp's "heavy metal football." The emphasis has shifted to calculated possession, with patient build-up play replacing breakneck transitions. The nominal formation is 4-2-3-1, but it fluidly morphs into 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 depending on the phase of play.
Unlike the all-out pressing of the Klopp era, Slot's system relies on specific triggers to initiate the press: a poor touch, a sideways pass, or an opponent trapped near the touchline. This allows the team to conserve energy and maintain structural balance. The results speak for themselves: expected goals against fell by over 16% in Slot's first season, demonstrating a more controlled defensive approach without sacrificing attacking output.
Opened in 1884 and home to the club since its founding, Anfield is one of the most iconic grounds in world football. The Kop is perhaps the most famous stand in the sport, where "You'll Never Walk Alone" reverberates before every match in a spine-tingling ritual known around the globe.
The Anfield Road Stand expansion was completed during the 2023-24 season, adding approximately 7,000 seats. The current capacity stands at 61,276, making it the fifth-largest Premier League ground. The project was delayed by the original contractor entering administration, but a new contractor completed the work and a General Safety Certificate was granted in April 2025.
