Club History

Newcastle United were formed in 1892 through the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. Based at St James' Park in the heart of Tyneside, the club have been a cornerstone of North East English football for over 130 years. In the early 1900s they won three league titles, and in the 1950s they claimed three consecutive FA Cups.

The 1990s brought a thrilling era under Kevin Keegan, whose "Entertainers" side — featuring Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, and David Ginola — played some of the most exciting football the Premier League has ever seen. The 1995-96 title race, in which Newcastle surrendered a 12-point lead to Manchester United, remains one of the most dramatic chapters in English football history.

Bobby Robson led the club to Champions League football in the early 2000s, but a turbulent period followed with relegation in 2009 and 2016. The club's trajectory changed decisively with new ownership in 2021.

The Saudi PIF Transformation

In October 2021, a consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed a takeover worth approximately 300 million pounds. Alongside PCP Capital Partners and the Reuben Brothers, the acquisition made Newcastle the richest club in world football by ownership wealth overnight.

Manager Eddie Howe inherited a team in the relegation zone and transformed them into Champions League contenders within 18 months. The 2022-23 season saw Newcastle return to Europe's elite competition for the first time in 20 years, and in 2024-25, they lifted the EFL Cup — their first major trophy since 1969. The project has been marked by measured investment rather than the spending spree many expected, building sustainable foundations for long-term success.

Playing Style

Eddie Howe deploys a 4-3-3 as his primary formation, emphasising high-intensity attacking football with rapid transitions. In the build-up phase, Newcastle build patiently from the back, but their speed on the counter is among the best in the league — their high-speed sprint count during build-up play was the highest in the Premier League in 2024-25.

Out of possession, the team shifts to a 4-5-1 mid-to-low block, compacting centrally and channelling opponents wide. Sandro Tonali anchors the midfield with his passing range and intelligence, while the wide players exploit space in transition. Newcastle's expected goals from fast breaks ranked second only to Liverpool last season, illustrating their devastating efficiency on the counter-attack.

St James' Park

Home to Newcastle since the club's formation in 1892, St James' Park holds 52,264 supporters and stands as the ninth-largest football stadium in England. Perched on a hill overlooking the city centre, the stadium is a Tyneside landmark visible from miles around.

The ground has undergone numerous expansions, most notably during Sir John Hall's ownership in the 1990s when capacity was dramatically increased. Under the new ownership group, plans for further expansion have been reported, reflecting the club's growing ambitions both on and off the pitch.
