One draw in 38 games
Barcelona’s 31-1-6 is a shape you almost never see in a major European league.
A single draw. That does not mean they never dropped points — it means they only ever won or lost. Their six defeats match Real Madrid’s, so the losses were not eliminated. What produced 94 points was converting nearly every game that looked like ending level.
Turning four draws into wins is worth eight points, and most of the gap between Barcelona and Real Madrid (five draws) sits in exactly that. Ninety-five goals scored was the highest in the division and 36 conceded the second lowest, so both ends were working.
Villarreal third, Atlético fourth
Villarreal’s 72 goals were the third highest in the league, behind only the top two, and 72 points is a strong return for third.
Atlético Madrid finished on 69 with 62 scored and 44 conceded — ten fewer goals than Villarreal and two fewer conceded, which is about as Atlético as a season gets. Second to fourth reads 86, 72, 69, so the title race had narrowed to two clubs early.
Betis and their 15 draws
Fifth-placed Real Betis went 15-15-8, the most draws in the division. It is the exact inverse of Barcelona’s shape, and it produced 60 points.
A team with one draw finished first and a team with fifteen finished fifth, in the same league. Two completely different ways of accumulating points, coexisting.
Relegation decided by one point
The real story was at the bottom. Six clubs, 13th to 18th, finished on 43, 43, 43, 42, 42, 42.

One point separated the relegation place from safe mid-table. Results on the final day could have reshuffled all six. Mallorca went 11-9-18; Sevilla in 13th went 12-7-19 — one more win and two fewer draws. That was the whole difference.
Girona in 19th finished on 41 with 9-14-15: fourteen draws were not enough. Oviedo, bottom, scored 26 goals, and the shortfall was obvious.
Athletic Bilbao, 12th
Athletic Bilbao, a fixture in the European places in recent seasons, finished 12th on 45 points. Forty-three scored and 58 conceded reads like a lower-table side, and 19 defeats is a lot for a club built on stability and its own academy. A steep decline by their standards.
Into 2026-27
Deportivo La Coruña (after eight years), Racing Santander (after fourteen) and Málaga are back in the top division — three clubs with long first-division histories, returning Galicia, Cantabria and Andalusia to the map.
