Arsenal, 22 years on
Their first league title since 2003-04 — a full generation after the unbeaten side.
The foundation was not the attack but the defence. Their 71 goals were fewer than Manchester City’s 77, but 27 conceded was the only figure in the twenties in the division. City conceded 35 and United 50, which puts Arsenal’s defensive record on a different scale from everyone else’s. Five defeats says the same thing in another way.
Eighty-five points is not a remarkable winning total by recent standards. The seven-point margin existed because the chasing pack dropped points collectively.
The champions finished fifth
Liverpool went into the season as reigning champions and came out of it fifth on 60 points. Twelve defeats is the telling number: not a shortage of wins but an excess of losses. Sixty-three goals is respectable for fifth; 53 conceded is what kept them out of the title race.
Retaining this league has proved difficult repeatedly in recent years, but dropping to fifth the season after winning it is a steep fall.
Bournemouth’s 18 draws
The strangest number of the season is 18 draws in sixth place.
Thirteen wins, 18 draws, seven defeats. Only Arsenal (5) and Manchester City (6) lost fewer games. Bournemouth were a side that almost never lost and almost never closed a game out. Convert six of those draws into wins and they finish on 75 points, in the middle of the race for second.
It is also a clean illustration that there is more than one route to a points total. While the clubs above them settled games decisively, Bournemouth stacked up draws all the way to sixth.
Sunderland, seventh as a promoted club
Seventh place for a newly promoted club is close to unheard of in the recent Premier League. Their 42 goals were among the lowest in the division and their goal difference was minus six — a negative goal difference in seventh means they won the close games.
Against a background in which promoted clubs had increasingly gone straight back down, this was an outlier.
Relegated on 39 points
The bottom of the table is the season’s other distinguishing feature. West Ham’s 39 points in 18th would have been enough to survive in most years. Forty points has long been treated as the safety benchmark, but this season 15th-placed Crystal Palace had 45, Nottingham Forest 44 and Tottenham 41 — the lower-middle of the table was packed into one- and two-point steps.
At the same time Wolverhampton won three games and Burnley four. Those two were effectively gone early, which turned the remaining place into a fight settled at an unusually high points total.
Tottenham’s 17th place (10-11-17) is their lowest finish in recent memory.
Into 2026-27
Coventry, Hull City and Ipswich came up. Coventry return after 25 years, and Ipswich after a long absence of their own.
