Lens on 70 points
The headline of this season should be second-placed Lens and their 70 points.
PSG winning on 76 fits the pattern of recent years, but the margin was six points. Lens’s 22 wins were two short of PSG’s 24, and their 35 goals conceded was the second-best defensive record in the division behind PSG’s 29. They matched the champions at both ends of the pitch across a whole season.
RC Lens sits in the northern coalfield and operates on a mid-table budget by Ligue 1 standards. Closing to within six points of a vastly better-funded capital club is the story of the year.
PSG’s 76 is not a big number
Conversely, 76 points is not a dominant total. In a 34-game league that is a win rate in the high sixties, with six defeats along the way. Their 74 goals led the division, but not by a distance.
This was a season in which the top of the table compressed. Lille 61, Lyon 60, Marseille 59, Rennes 59 — four clubs inside two points from third to sixth — kept the European places moving until the end. Marseille and Rennes finished level on 59 and were separated by goal difference (+18 against +9).
A match on the record as awarded
The final round included Nantes v Toulouse, recorded as a technical loss (AWD). Both clubs therefore played 33 matches while everyone else played 34.
An awarded result showing up in a league table is unusual — an irregularity preserved in the data. It is also why Toulouse in 10th and Paris FC in 11th sit level on 44 points.
Nantes finished 17th on 23 points with 5-8-20, so they were in the relegation places regardless.
Paris FC, 11th as a promoted club
Eleventh place and 44 points in their first season back is a notable result. Eleven wins, 11 draws, 12 defeats, 47 scored and 50 conceded is a settled campaign for a promoted club.
Paris FC and PSG trace back to the same club, split in 1972. This was the first season in half a century with two Paris clubs in the first division, and the smaller of them finished mid-table.
The bottom
Bottom club Metz went 3-8-23 and conceded 76. Their goal difference of minus 44 was the only figure worse than minus 40 in the division.
Nice survived in 16th on 32 points. Seven wins, 11 draws, 16 defeats and 60 conceded is not far off relegation form; the eleven draws just about carried them. A hard season for a club that has the Côte d’Azur derby with Monaco on its calendar.
Into 2026-27
Troyes and Le Mans came up. Troyes moved between the divisions through the 2000s and 2010s; Le Mans played top-flight football in the late 2000s with a reputation for developing players. Both are returning clubs.
Saint-Étienne are not in the first division again this season, so the Rhône derby with Lyon is still off the calendar.
