One defeat, second place
The number that defines this season is Arsenal’s single loss.
Fifteen wins, six draws, one defeat in 22 games. They lost once all season, and their 14 goals conceded was the best defensive record in the league — better than champions Manchester City’s 19. They still finished second on 51 points, because six of those games ended level.
City went 18-1-3. They lost three but drew only one. Three more defeats than Arsenal, three more wins. Rarely does a season demonstrate so cleanly that “closing games out” converts into points more reliably than “not losing”.
Two of Arsenal’s six draws turned into wins would have made them champions on 57.
Chelsea third
Chelsea in third is a significant turn in the WSL’s story — a club that dominated the league for years finishing behind two others on 49 points (15-4-3).
The numbers themselves are not poor. Fifteen wins was level with Arsenal, second only to City’s 18, and 20 conceded was the third-best record. But the top three finished on 55, 51 and 49 — six points covering all of them, which shows how tight the race was. Chelsea’s 44 goals fell short of City’s 62 and Arsenal’s 53, and the finishing decided the order.
London City Lionesses, sixth in year one
The first club without a men’s side to reach the WSL finished their debut season sixth, on 27 points (8-3-11, 28 scored and 35 conceded).
Most WSL clubs are run as a department of a men’s club. A standalone women’s football business establishing itself in mid-table is an answer of sorts to a question about how the league is structured.
The bottom
Leicester City finished bottom on 2-3-17 with 11 goals scored and 52 conceded — half a goal per game. Only one club was relegated, so 11th-placed Liverpool (17 points) survived.
Liverpool in 11th is worth noting in itself: a club that won back-to-back titles in the WSL’s early years went 4-5-13 and finished one place above the drop. With Everton eighth on 23, both Merseyside clubs spent the season in the lower half.
The last 12-club season
2025-26 was the final WSL season played with 12 clubs. From 2026-27 the league has expanded to 14.
Birmingham City, Charlton and Crystal Palace came up, and with only one club relegated the net gain was two.
- Birmingham City — in the WSL from its founding era, won a domestic cup in the early 2010s and went deep in Europe
- Charlton — competed near the top in the early 2000s before the club withdrew support for the women’s team, then worked their way back up
- Crystal Palace — from south London
The result is that seven of the 14 clubs in 2026-27 are from London. Half the league in the capital reflects how investment in women’s football concentrates in large cities.
