Clasico Weekend, Old Clubs Revisited, and Mitoma Against Endo

Updated 2026-10-23

The Clasico sits at the centre of this weekend. Barcelona host Real Madrid, putting Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe on the same pitch on the same night. In England, Chelsea and Tottenham meet as neighbours, with Conor Gallagher and Dominic Solanke returning to the club that raised them. Liverpool welcome Kaoru Mitoma's Brighton, the side that made Alexis Mac Allister's name. Crystal Palace field two Japan internationals in Daichi Kamada and Takehiro Tomiyasu, the Dutch headline act pairs Kodai Sano against Tsuyoshi Watanabe, and Rotterdam offers Shunsuke Mito against Ko Itakura. Japan's twelfth round sends Kashima to meet Kashiwa in a fixture full of reunions, and Saturday night belongs to the North London derby.

LIV Liverpool FC vs Brighton & Hove Albion BHA

Endo against Mitoma, and Mac Allister faces the Brighton side that made him

  • For anyone following Japanese players, this is the fixture of the weekend. Wataru Endo captains his national team and was once crowned the Bundesliga's duel king at VfB Stuttgart, and he still wins the ball back as well as anyone at Liverpool. Kaoru Mitoma, the Brighton winger who came through university football at Tsukuba, has spent years unsettling Premier League full-backs with his changes of pace.
  • Alexis Mac Allister meets the club that put him on this stage. He left Brighton for Liverpool after making his name on the south coast, and the Argentina midfielder, a world champion in 2022, now sets the tempo and does the dirty work in equal measure. Brighton can answer with Pascal Gross, back from Borussia Dortmund and still their most reliable deliverer from set pieces.
  • The attacking names alone are worth the admission. Liverpool have Alexander Isak, the 192cm Sweden striker signed from Newcastle United, alongside Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen's unbeaten title side and PSV graduate Cody Gakpo. Fabian Hurzeler's Brighton build from Bart Verbruggen, a goalkeeper comfortable with the ball at his feet, and carry a counter-attack led by Gambia winger Yankuba Minteh and Georginio Rutter.

CHE Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur TOT

Gallagher and Solanke go back to Chelsea in a London neighbours' meeting

  • London neighbours meet, and several of the visitors know this dressing room well. Conor Gallagher grew up in Chelsea's academy, made his name on loan at Crystal Palace and arrived at Tottenham by way of Atletico Madrid. Dominic Solanke is another Chelsea product, now leading the Spurs line after his breakthrough years at Bournemouth, and Mykhailo Mudryk also spent time on these books.
  • The two midfields are built on different ideas. Liam Rosenior's Chelsea pair Enzo Fernandez, a World Cup winner in 2022, with Moises Caicedo, signed from Brighton for a British record fee. Igor Tudor counters with Sandro Tonali, long compared to Andrea Pirlo, plus James Maddison on the dead balls and Leeds United graduate Archie Gray for balance.
  • The individual duels could decide it. Cole Palmer's left foot and the dribbling of Estevao, the Palmeiras teenager nicknamed Messinho, run into Micky van de Ven, perhaps the quickest centre-back in the division, and Kevin Danso, hardened by his years at RC Lens. Joao Pedro, who proved his range of finishing and creating at Brighton, is the other variable in Chelsea's front line.

CRY Crystal Palace vs Newcastle United NEW

Kamada and Tomiyasu's Palace host Eddie Howe's Newcastle

  • Crystal Palace are the Premier League club Japanese viewers watch most closely right now. Daichi Kamada won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt and brings his through-balls from the half-spaces, having also helped Palace to the 2025 FA Cup. Takehiro Tomiyasu spent four seasons at Arsenal and can fill in at right-back, centre-back or in midfield with his 187cm frame.
  • Oliver Glasner's front line mixes height with running power. Jean-Philippe Mateta, scorer in the 2025 FA Cup final, is joined by Jorgen Strand Larsen, the 193cm Norway striker signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a club-record fee. Jeremy Pino wears the number ten after his Villarreal years, and Ismaila Sarr, once Watford's player of the season, adds pace on the other flank.
  • Eddie Howe arrives with Yoan Wissa, who set Brentford's Premier League scoring record, and Nick Woltemade, the 198cm forward signed from VfB Stuttgart. Anthony Elanga, the Sweden winger developed at Manchester United, attacks from the right. Waiting for them is Dean Henderson, the Palace captain whose shot-stopping underpinned the club's recent cup run.

BAR FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid RMA

Clasico night, with Yamal and Mbappe on the same stage

  • This is the fixture that changes the mood of a season. Hansi Flick's Barcelona lead with their academy line: Lamine Yamal and his left foot, Pedri's control in tight spaces, and Gavi's refusal to lose a duel. Carlo Ancelotti answers with raw individual power in Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham.
  • Marc Cucurella has the strangest night of all. He was raised in Barcelona's academy before a long road through Eibar, Getafe, Brighton and Chelsea, and he now attacks the left flank for Madrid with relentless running. On the other side is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who swapped Liverpool for Madrid and whose right-footed passing range is as good as the game offers.
  • The midfield and defensive match-ups repay close attention. Barcelona progress through Frenkie de Jong's carrying and Dani Olmo's final ball, with teenage regular Pau Cubarsi and Andreas Christensen behind them. Madrid squeeze the middle with Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga, the 195cm Dean Huijsen and Antonio Rudiger behind, and the 200cm Thibaut Courtois in goal.

RSO Real Sociedad vs Levante UD LEV

Kubo's Real Sociedad host Levante, and Olazagasti returns to his old academy

  • If you want to watch Takefusa Kubo, this is the match. Raised in Real Madrid's academy and schooled by loans at Mallorca, Villarreal and Getafe, he has settled in San Sebastian as a right winger who invites pressure before releasing his left foot. His defensive work has grown year on year. Keita Kita, from FC Tokyo's youth system, is on the same books.
  • Real Sociedad are led by their captain, Mikel Oyarzabal, the left-footed forward who scored the goal that won EURO 2024 for Spain and still supplies both the finish and the final pass. Behind him stands Alex Remiro, another member of that Spain squad, while Orri Oskarsson, the Iceland striker signed from FC Copenhagen for a club-record fee, waits for his chance.
  • Levante bring a homecoming of their own. Jon Ander Olazagasti learned the game in Real Sociedad's academy and remains a left-footed technician who sets the rhythm in possession. Veteran goalkeeper Mat Ryan also spent time guarding this same goal. Julian Calero leans on experience elsewhere, not least Algeria international Aissa Mandi at the back.

PSG Paris Saint Germain vs Olympique Lyonnais LYO

PSG meet Lyon, with academy man Corentin Tolisso leading the visitors

  • Two pillars of French football meet in Paris. Luis Enrique's side is built around Ousmane Dembele, who found a new level once he was fixed as the centre-forward, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cutting in from the left after his title-winning years at Napoli. Vitinha and academy graduate Warren Zaire-Emery dictate the tempo, and Achraf Hakimi supplies the right flank.
  • Paulo Fonseca's Lyon are captained by a man who grew up here. Corentin Tolisso came through the club's academy before winning the World Cup in 2018 and the Champions League with Bayern Munich, and he still gets into the box as often as he screens in front of the defence. Beside him sits Tyler Morton, a Liverpool academy product who keeps the ball moving.
  • Lyon's threat is built on speed. Malick Fofana, the Belgium winger developed at Gent, attacks from the left, while Lois Openda, who scored heavily at Lens and RB Leipzig, runs the channels. At the back, World Cup winner Nicolas Tagliafico and Senegal international Moussa Niakhate, once the captain at Mainz, carry the job of absorbing Parisian pressure.

PSV PSV Eindhoven vs Feyenoord FEY

Sano faces Watanabe in the Dutch headline act, with Geertruida against his old club

  • Three Japanese players are tied to the biggest match in the Netherlands this weekend. PSV's Kodai Sano, who arrived via Fagiano Okayama and NEC Nijmegen, wins the ball and moves it with equal care. Feyenoord have Tsuyoshi Watanabe, the Japan centre-back who captained Gent on the pitch, and Ayase Ueda, signed for a club-record fee after scoring 22 goals at Cercle Brugge.
  • There is a reunion thread too. Lutsharel Geertruida won the Conference League with Feyenoord and now covers right-back, centre-back and holding midfield for PSV. Guus Til, the attacking midfielder whose timing into the box is his trademark, also spent time in Rotterdam. Feyenoord answer with a centre-back who came home: Sinn Juste, raised in their academy, returned after spells at Mainz and Sporting CP.
  • Both number tens are worth the ticket. Paul Wanner, the youngest player ever to appear for Bayern Munich, operates behind the striker for PSV after a formative loan at Heidenheim. Luciano Valente, raised at Groningen, dictates for Feyenoord with his positioning and passing range, while Sem Steijn arrives in the box as an Eredivisie Golden Boot and player of the year winner.

SPA Sparta Rotterdam vs Ajax AJA

Mito and Itakura, a Japanese crossing in Rotterdam

  • Rotterdam could give us a Japanese duel. Shunsuke Mito left Albirex Niigata for Sparta and, at 164cm, cuts in from the left with quick feet and a work rate that never drops. Ko Itakura is the first Japanese player in Ajax's history, a 188cm centre-back who spent three seasons as a regular at Borussia Monchengladbach and rarely loses a physical contest.
  • Ajax travel with a remarkable amount of experience. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who guarded Barcelona's goal for more than a decade, is behind a midfield containing club legend Davy Klaassen in his third spell, and a defence featuring Daley Blind, a veteran of Manchester United and Bayern Munich. Kasper Dolberg, back from Nice and Sevilla, leads the line.
  • Sparta meet them with hardened defenders. Bruno Martins Indi, a former Netherlands international, organises the back line as a left-footed centre-back with FC Porto and Feyenoord behind him. Toornstra, eight seasons a Feyenoord player, sits in midfield, while Joel Ideho, an Arsenal academy graduate, and a 188cm target man supply the threat up front.

J1 League

KAS Kashima vs Kashiwa Reysol REY

Kashima against Kashiwa, a fixture built on reunions

  • Few J1 fixtures carry this many reunions. Kashiwa Reysol's Tomoya Inukai was a regular at Kashima Antlers, and Daiki Sugioka, Yuki Kakita and Hayato Nakama all spent time there too. Travelling the other way in spirit is Kashima's Ryuta Koike, a Kashiwa product and a right-back with Belgian football at Lokeren behind him, who now attacks the goal he once defended.
  • Kashima's forward line is deep. Yuma Suzuki fights for everything while combining hold-up play with finishing, Leo Ceara arrives as the man whose goals drove the 2025 title, and Gaku Shibasaki, scorer of two goals against Real Madrid in the 2016 Club World Cup final, still sets the tempo. Behind them is Tomoki Hayakawa, the 2025 J.League MVP and a Best Eleven selection.
  • Kashiwa build around Mao Hosoya. An academy graduate who covers fifty metres in six seconds, the Japan striker is at his most dangerous running beyond the last line. Taiyo Koga plays the sharp vertical passes from defence, Riki Harakawa supplies dead-ball precision, and Yoshio Koizumi, an AFC Champions League winner with Urawa, must find space against Naomichi Ueda and Ikuma Sekigawa.

TOTW Tottenham Hotspur Women vs Arsenal Women ARSW

North London derby, with Toko Koga meeting Arsenal

  • The North London derby has a Japan international at its heart. Toko Koga joined Tottenham from Feyenoord in July 2025 and became the club's youngest ever scorer at nineteen. She is strong in the air and comfortable starting attacks from the back, and she started every match for Japan at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Alessia Russo and Stina Blackstenius will test all of it.
  • Spurs also field a player returning to familiar faces. Victoria Pelova, the Netherlands midfielder, spent time at Arsenal and still thrives in tight areas with her close control and running. Around her are Eveliina Summanen, holder of the club's WSL assist record, and Norway's Gaupset, a league champion and player of the year at Brann.
  • Renee Slegers' Arsenal simply have quality everywhere. Captain Kim Little remains one of the finest playmakers in the game, England captain Leah Williamson organises the back line, Mariona Caldentey arrived after a decade at Barcelona, and Chloe Kelly scored the goal that won EURO 2022. Georgia Stanway, signed this summer from Bayern Munich, adds steel in midfield.
