About the League
Founded in 1956, the Eredivisie is the top tier of Dutch football. The 'Big Three' — Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, and Feyenoord — have won the vast majority of league titles and defined the competition's identity. The philosophy of 'Total Football,' pioneered by Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, revolutionized world football, and its DNA still runs through the league today. Renowned for attacking, attractive football and elite youth development — Ajax's academy 'De Toekomst' is considered one of the world's finest — the Eredivisie has exported world-class talent including Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, and Cody Gakpo. Historic rivalries like De Klassieker (Ajax vs Feyenoord) and De Topper (Ajax vs PSV) add extra drama to the 306-match season played across 18 clubs in a home-and-away round-robin format. The champions qualify for the UEFA Champions League; the bottom two are automatically relegated to the Eerste Divisie, with 16th place entering a relegation play-off.
Season Storylines
PSV Eindhoven took their 27th title in 2025-26, wrapping it up as early as 5 April and finishing on 84 points — 19 clear of Feyenoord (65). NEC third, Twente fourth and Ajax fifth showed that the top places are no longer only about the big three. Three clubs come up: ADO Den Haag (second-tier champions on 89 points), Cambuur (runners-up) and Willem II (through the play-offs), replacing Volendam, Heracles and NAC Breda. ADO return after five years, Willem II after one.
Japanese Players
The Eredivisie carries one of Europe's larger Japanese contingents: eight players across five of the 14 clubs this season. Feyenoord have Ayase Ueda and Go Watanabe, NEC Nijmegen have Koki Ogawa and Kodai Sano — two apiece. Ajax field Ko Itakura, AZ Alkmaar have Rion Ichihara and Seiya Maikuma, and Sparta Rotterdam have Shunsuke Mito. They are spread from the top of the table to mid-table, so there is usually a Japanese player involved somewhere on any given matchday.
