Two Derbies in One WSL Weekend

Bompastor's Chelsea host Slegers' Arsenal in an early heavyweight clash

• Sonia Bompastor's Chelsea take on Renée Slegers' Arsenal at Kingsmeadow, with the midfield battle likely to shape everything. Keira Walsh, signed from Barcelona, will try to dictate tempo against Arsenal captain and club legend Kim Little. Behind them, Naomi Girma and Leah Williamson decide how high each defence dares to push.
• Katie McCabe faces the club she left, and the Republic of Ireland captain's left foot remains Chelsea's most reliable set-piece weapon. On the other side, Alessia Russo has Chelsea in her past too, and now leads an Arsenal attack reshaped this summer by Georgia Stanway from Bayern and Ona Batlle back from Barcelona.
• Chelsea carry two Japanese attackers: winger Maika Hamano and midfielder Matsukubo. Hamano, still only 22, built her WSL minutes on loan at Tottenham and struck the winner in the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup final. Matsukubo arrived after being named the NWSL's midfielder of the year, and her pressing would give Chelsea a different gear off the bench.

A Merseyside derby with Japan internationals on both sides

• Gareth Taylor's Liverpool host Scott Phelan's Everton in a derby that usually turns on second balls. Fuka Nagano and Marie-Therese Höbinger set the rhythm for the home side, while Honoka Hayashi and Clare Wheeler are built to break it up for Everton. Expect the tempo to be decided by whoever wins the first ten minutes of duels.
• Everton field a remarkable Japanese contingent — Rion Ishikawa, Honoka Hayashi, Hikaru Kitagawa and Yuka Momiki — set against Liverpool's Fuka Nagano. • Hinata Miyazawa, the Golden Boot winner at the 2023 Women's World Cup, is the quickest way through a defence that United possess. West Ham answer with Saki Kumagai, Japan's captain and a serial trophy winner from her Lyon years, alongside penalty-box poacher Riko Ueki and long-serving Urawa full-back Yu Endo. Few WSL fixtures split the Nadeshiko squad so evenly.
• Katie Zelem returns to Leigh Sports Village as a former Manchester United captain who sits high on the club's all-time appearance list. Her set-piece delivery is West Ham's most direct source of danger against a defence she knows intimately. Ebony Salmon is another with United in her past, giving the away side plenty of extra motivation.
• Marc Skinner's summer business brought Andrea Medina from Atlético Madrid, Mexico captain Rebeca Bernal and Swedish winger Monica Jusu Bah to United. Rita Guarino's West Ham lean on Australian veteran Katrina Gorry to control the middle third. How quickly the new arrivals settle on either side could decide the shape of the afternoon.

Japan close their September window against Venezuela

• Four days after facing Uruguay, Japan round off their September window against Venezuela. With Brazil and Paraguay already pencilled in for November, this is part of a deliberate run of South American opposition designed to test Japan against a different rhythm. The Monday evening kick-off in Tokyo makes it an easy one to catch.
• The post-World Cup squad is at the start of a generational handover. Wataru Endo and Shogo Taniguchi still anchor the spine, while younger names such as Ryunosuke Sato, born in 2006, and FC Copenhagen defender Junnosuke Suzuki have been called up repeatedly.
