The WSL Kicks Off, and a Weekend Full of Reunions

Arsenal vs Chelsea: a London derby stacked with reunions.

• Arsenal host Chelsea at 16:30 BST on Sunday 6 September (00:30 JST Monday) to close matchday three. Arsenal field two players signed from Chelsea: Noni Madueke, a left-footed right winger who lives on the cut-in, and Kai Havertz, a false-nine type as comfortable dropping into build-up as arriving in the box.
• The traffic runs both ways. Chelsea's Danny Welbeck came through Manchester United and later played for Arsenal, and still leads a line with pressing and back-to-goal work. Arsenal's Kepa Arrizabalaga, once the most expensive goalkeeper in the world when Chelsea signed him, adds another layer even from the bench.
• Both squads can be reshaped up front, so the shape is genuinely unknown until the sheets drop. Whether Madueke or Bukayo Saka gets the right flank, and whether Havertz starts central or a line deeper, tells you what each coach expects from the matchup.

Brighton vs Leeds: Kaoru Mitoma and Ao Tanaka, both out of Kawasaki Frontale.

• Brighton host Leeds at 15:00 BST on Saturday 5 September. Kaoru Mitoma is a left winger who changes pace to go outside or inside at will; Ao Tanaka is the metronome in the Leeds midfield. Both left Kawasaki Frontale for Europe, and both could be on this pitch.
• The tactical question is how Leeds handle Brighton's left. Tanaka built his reputation at Fortuna Düsseldorf partly on defensive intensity, so what he does without the ball is as interesting as what he does with it.
• Neither start is guaranteed, of course. Whether the two share the pitch at all is the first thing worth checking when the line-ups arrive.

Hull City vs Aston Villa: Hidemasa Morita and Zion Suzuki on opposite sides.

• Kickoff is 17:30 BST on Saturday 5 September (01:30 JST Sunday). Newly promoted Hull City have Hidemasa Morita, a midfielder who went from Ryutsu Keizai University to Kawasaki Frontale, then Santa Clara and Sporting, and who covers ground, wins the ball and distributes at a high level. How that game translates to the Premier League is the story.
• Aston Villa bring Zion Suzuki, Japan's first-choice goalkeeper — a 190cm modern keeper strong on crosses and comfortable with the ball at his feet, who moved from Urawa Red Diamonds to Italy before England. Morita carrying play against Suzuki guarding the goal would make this a special ninety minutes for Japanese viewers.
• A promoted side's home games reveal identity fast: how high the block sits, where the substitutions come from, and in this case where Morita is asked to operate. The formation and starting eleven already answer much of that.

Real Betis vs Real Madrid, with a Betis side full of Madrid alumni.

• Real Betis host Real Madrid at 21:00 CEST on Friday 4 September (04:00 JST Saturday) in La Liga's fourth round. Betis line up with Isco, Dani Ceballos and Fran García — a Champions League-winning playmaker, a technician who thrives in tight areas, and a Madrid academy left-back respectively.
• Add Diego Llorente and Álvaro Fidalgo, both products of Real Madrid Castilla, and a sizeable chunk of the Betis squad has a Madrid line on its CV. How players open a game against a former club is never quite predictable.
• Betis are built to turn Isco toward goal; Madrid's job is to cut that supply off early. Whether Isco and Ceballos start together is the first detail to look for.

Valencia vs Barcelona: teenage Ryunosuke Sato, and Cancelo back at Mestalla.

• Valencia host Barcelona at 16:15 CEST on Sunday 6 September. Valencia have Ryunosuke Sato, a 19-year-old midfielder who joined permanently from FC Tokyo in July 2026 after roughly a decade in the club's system — small at 171cm, but technically sharp and a natural ball-carrier who has been central to Japan's youth sides.
• Barcelona's João Cancelo returns to a former club. He can play either flank and likes to join the build-up high up the pitch, so the duel down Valencia's side will set much of the game's temperature.
• For Valencia, the question is how far they can push back a side that wants the ball. Whether Sato starts or comes on is a small decision that says a lot about where the club is right now.

PSG vs Monaco, with Akliouche and Kehrer facing the clubs that made them.

• Paris Saint-Germain vs Monaco headlines Ligue 1's third round at 21:05 CEST on Friday 4 September. PSG's Maghnes Akliouche came through Monaco's La Diagonale academy and won silver with France at the Paris 2024 Olympics; facing the club that raised him is a storyline in itself.
• Monaco counter with Thilo Kehrer, who spent four seasons at PSG. Primarily a centre-back but able to fill either full-back slot, he defends duels well and covers a lot of ground. If his zone overlaps with Akliouche's, that is the individual battle to watch.
• PSG rotate heavily depending on the wider calendar, and Monaco's shape on the road is rarely fixed either. The team sheets will define what kind of match this becomes.

Ajax vs PSV — De Topper, with Ko Itakura and Kodai Sano both in it.

• De Topper — Ajax vs PSV — kicks off at 20:00 CEST on Saturday 5 September (03:00 JST Sunday). Ajax's Ko Itakura is the first Japanese player in the club's history, an 188cm centre-back who wins his duels in the air and can step into the build-up after three seasons as a regular at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
• PSV's Kodai Sano arrived via Fagiano Okayama and NEC Nijmegen, a midfielder who both wins the ball and moves it cleanly. Sano circulating possession in front of the line Itakura is defending would make this essential viewing in Japan.
• Sergiño Dest adds another thread: an attacking full-back raised in the Ajax academy who went to Barcelona and Milan before returning to the Eredivisie. How he is received, and how he matches up against the Ajax flank, is part of the noise.

Kashima Antlers vs Urawa Reds — two of Japanese football's heavyweights.

• Kashima Antlers host Urawa Reds at 18:00 JST on Sunday 6 September in J1's sixth round — a fixture that has carried weight since the league's earliest days. Kashima's Yuma Suzuki holds the ball up, creates for others and drags the team forward with sheer aggression.
• Gaku Shibasaki sits behind him, a playmaker with seven seasons of Spanish football whose vision and range of passing remain among the best in the division. Léo Ceará gives the front line another dimension, equally dangerous from distance and in the air.
• Urawa answer with Shusaku Nishikawa in goal, a modern keeper with a superb left foot and over 600 J1 appearances behind him, and Samuel Gustafson in midfield — a 187cm Sweden international whose Serie A years show in his positional discipline.

Cerezo Osaka vs Tokyo Verdy: Shinji Kagawa, and Shinnosuke Hatanaka facing his first club.

• Cerezo Osaka host Tokyo Verdy at 19:00 JST on Sunday 6 September. Shinji Kagawa, the Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United attacking midfielder who defined a generation of Japanese football, still has the quick first step and the instinct around goal that made him. Whether Cerezo have someone able to turn in central areas shapes the whole match.
• Cerezo centre-back Shinnosuke Hatanaka began his professional career at Tokyo Verdy, so this is a return. Right-footed but comfortable on his left, he builds from the back — and how high Verdy press will decide how hard that job is.
• Verdy captain Koki Morita has never played for another club. Wearing number 10, he keeps the ball calmly under pressure and drives it forward himself; the midfield contest with Cerezo is likely to settle the rhythm.

WSL opening day: Manchester City vs Birmingham City, with Japanese players on both benches.

• The Women's Super League opens at 14:30 BST on Sunday 6 September with Manchester City hosting Birmingham City. City have Yui Hasegawa, captain of Japan — a defensive midfielder whose positioning and passing run the game, and who has already passed 100 appearances for the club.
• Around her: Aoba Fujino, a left winger and two-time WE League MVP; right-back Risa Shimizu; and goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita, named best goalkeeper at the 2026 Asian Cup. How those pieces fit together on opening day is effectively City's blueprint for the season.
• Birmingham have their own Japanese contingent: 22-year-old Suzu Amano, signed from Växjö in August 2026, and defender Asato Miyagawa, raised at Nippon TV Tokyo Verdy Beleza — the two were teammates at Hammarby. Goalkeeper Katie Startup, meanwhile, has spent time at Manchester City, making this a reunion of her own.
